Thick small royal 8vo., pp xii, 566, [2] blank and with 87 maps and diagrams. Publisher's cloth gilt (faded on backstrip), endpapers cracked a little over hinges exposing part of the mull. Generally a good copy. Darby's own copy with his editorial corrections and additions, as well as his notes of correction to his own chapters. This copy was used for the edition of 1960. Sir (Henry) Clifford Darby (1909-1992), distinguished geographer. He was born in Neath, South Wales and was knighted in 1988. He 'influenced the discipline considerably through his own work and that of collaborators and graduate students ... The first to obtain a Ph.D. [at the young age of 22] in geography at Cambridge, he pioneered work in historical geography through studies of landscape change and the detailed geography of England as displayed by the Domesday Book ...'. Darby, of University College, London, to be a visiting professor and offer a survey course in historical geography ... the administration refused to provide the funds to set up a cartographical laboratory, without which he did not think a real concentration possible. He also said he hoped for an Oxbridge professorship and a "K" if he returned to England. And so he did, becoming professor of geography at Cambridge University and Sir Clifford Darby'. Stanley N.
