'A forge was operated at Robertsbridge, Sussex, between 1541 and 1573, with two furnaces, one at Robertsbridge between 1541 and 1546, and the other at Panningridge'. These were built by Sir William Sydney and then passed to his son Sir Henry in 1553. The latter built the steelworks and also the Glamorgan ironworks.
